Farmington Man Charged With Aggravated Fleeing After Dead-End Standoff on Road 5293

A Farmington man has been charged with aggravated fleeing after deputies say he ran a stop sign and sped away before pulling into a dead-end driveway and retreating inside a home, where he allegedly locked a woman outside.

Elio Gonzalez, 41, is accused of aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer following a traffic stop attempt near Road 5030 and Road 3150 that ended at a residence on Road 5293, according to an affidavit for arrest warrant.

According to the affidavit, a San Juan County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a gray Dodge Challenger after it failed to stop at a posted stop sign and did not slow or check for traffic while other motorists were present. The vehicle then accelerated away, increasing speed beyond the posted limit.

The deputy reported the vehicle continued to flee before turning onto Road 5293 and driving to the end of the road, where it stopped at a residence. The deputy deactivated emergency equipment and followed at a distance, according to the affidavit.

At the residence, a woman told deputies Gonzalez had just arrived and appeared possibly intoxicated. She reported seeing him pull quickly into the driveway and go inside the home, according to the affidavit.

When deputies attempted to make contact, the woman told Gonzalez to come outside, but he allegedly yelled at her from inside and locked her out of the house after she stepped outside. Deputies reported knocking and calling out for several minutes while observing Gonzalez through a window, where he appeared to pretend to be asleep, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit states the woman gave deputies permission to enter the home, but because the door was locked and entry would have required damaging the property, deputies instead sought an arrest warrant.
