Aztec Woman Charged After Alleged Farmington Crash Involving Infant

An Aztec woman has been charged with two counts of child abuse and four other offenses after a vehicle allegedly struck members of a family walking near 17th Street and Farmington Avenue in Farmington, according to a criminal complaint and arrest-warrant affidavit.

Alexandria Renee Wilson, 34, is charged in San Juan County Magistrate Court in connection with the Sept. 1 incident. The criminal complaint was filed Sept. 23.

All charges are allegations based on court records, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

According to the arrest-warrant affidavit, a Farmington police officer was dispatched at about 8:26 p.m. Sept. 1 to the area of 17th Street and Farmington Avenue after a report that a vehicle had struck pedestrians and did not stop.

The affidavit states a man told police he was walking northbound with family members in the bike lane along Farmington Avenue when a vehicle traveling in the same direction allegedly swerved into the bike lane and struck him, a 17-year-old girl and an infant who was secured in a car-seat carrier attached to a stroller.

According to the affidavit, the man told police the impact pushed the group forward and into gravel near the roadway. He reported that the stroller and car-seat carrier were knocked from his hands and that the infant’s carrier detached from the stroller.

The man reported being struck near his lower back but denied having any major injuries, according to the affidavit. Police said the infant was removed from the carrier and evaluated by emergency personnel before the family decided to have the child transported by ambulance to a hospital for further evaluation.

The affidavit states the 17-year-old told police she was struck but did not report a major injury. The supplied records do not document great bodily harm or death resulting from the collision.

Police reported that the vehicle was described as a smaller, older-model blue SUV. A witness at a nearby apartment complex told investigators she heard screeching and a loud thump, then saw a vehicle make contact with people who were walking, according to the affidavit. The witness reported that the vehicle did not stop and later traveled eastbound on 18th Street.

Investigators later located an unoccupied blue Toyota RAV4 parked at the Farmington Apartments on North Fairview Avenue, the affidavit states. Police reported that the SUV was parked at an angle with no license plate and that officers could see several items inside that they believed were drug paraphernalia.

According to the affidavit, surveillance video from the apartment complex showed the vehicle entering the parking lot at a fast speed before stopping. Police reported that surveillance video showed a woman exit the vehicle, walk away from it and eventually run out of camera view.

The affidavit states investigators compared the woman seen in the apartment video with information obtained during a separate police contact earlier that day involving the same vehicle identification number. Investigators reported that the woman’s clothing, hairstyle and visible tattoo were consistent with Wilson’s appearance during that earlier contact.

Police also reported finding multiple documents bearing Wilson’s name inside the Toyota during execution of a Sept. 3 search warrant. According to the affidavit, investigators concluded that Wilson was the person shown driving the vehicle into the apartment complex shortly after the collision.

Officers also reported recovering several items they identified as drug paraphernalia during a search of the Toyota. Investigators said a brown substance found inside a grinder was to be submitted for testing; the supplied records do not include a laboratory result.
