A Kirtland man has been charged with first-degree murder in his wife’s death after investigators reported finding a cellphone video allegedly showing him standing on her chest as she struggled to breathe, according to a criminal complaint and arrest-warrant affidavit filed Oct. 8 in San Juan County.
Jess K. Patterson, 34, is accused in the Oct. 4, 2026, death of his wife, 36-year-old Lauren Patterson, at their residence in the Kirtland area. Investigators cited the cellphone recording, preliminary autopsy findings, witness statements and evidence collected during a search of the residence in support of the murder allegation.
All charges are allegations based on court records, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
INVESTIGATION INTO LAUREN PATTERSON’S DEATH
According to an arrest-warrant affidavit prepared by San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Detective J. Courtney, deputies were dispatched Oct. 4 to a residence on County Road 6335 following a reported death.
Lauren Patterson was identified as the deceased woman. Detectives subsequently arrived to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.
The affidavit states Detective Chandler considered the circumstances suspicious and obtained a search warrant for the residence. Chandler also reported observing extensive bruising on Lauren Patterson’s body.
Jess Patterson and the couple’s two children were taken to a Sheriff’s Office substation for interviews, according to the affidavit.
Courtney reported interviewing Patterson at the Kirtland substation. Patterson appeared cognitively aware and answered questions clearly and quickly, the detective wrote.
Patterson acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier that day but described himself as “lucid” and capable of answering questions, according to Courtney.
Before questioning Patterson about possible abuse involving his wife, the detective advised him of his Miranda rights. Patterson agreed to continue speaking with investigators, according to the affidavit.
Patterson told Courtney that he and Lauren had been married for 17 years. When asked whether he had ever beaten, abused or physically put his hands on his wife, Patterson denied doing so.
DETECTIVE REPORTS FINDING CELLPHONE VIDEO
According to the affidavit, Detective Chandler obtained a search warrant for Jess Patterson’s cellphone, which investigators had previously taken during contact with him at the Kirtland substation.
Detective Adegite processed the phone and provided extracted information to Courtney, who began examining the data Oct. 7. Courtney reported finding messages he described as abusive toward Lauren Patterson, along with a video he believed Patterson had recorded himself. The affidavit states the messages would be documented in a separate investigative report.
Courtney reported that the video carried a creation timestamp of 5:12:33 p.m. Oct. 4. The supplied records do not include the recording or independent verification of the timestamp.
According to Courtney’s written description, the approximately one-minute-and-38-second recording appeared to show Lauren Patterson lying on the floor wearing an orange shirt while Jess Patterson stood on her chest with both feet. The detective alleged Patterson remained standing on her chest for approximately one minute and one second as she struggled to breathe.
Courtney reported that Patterson appeared to mimic Lauren’s breathing sounds and made several remarks while standing on her. The detective also alleged the recording showed Patterson kicking Lauren in the face twice, later stepping off her chest and pushing her head with his shoe. According to the affidavit, Patterson then walked away and the recording ended.
These descriptions are based on the detective’s account of the video. The supplied records do not establish the precise moment of Lauren Patterson’s death during the recording.
PRELIMINARY AUTOPSY FINDINGS
Lauren Patterson underwent an autopsy Oct. 6 at the Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque, according to the affidavit.
Courtney reported that investigators attended the examination and received preliminary findings identifying numerous rib fractures and a ruptured spleen that had begun bleeding internally.
The detective wrote that preliminary information from the medical investigator’s office indicated Lauren’s death was expected to be classified as resulting from “blunt force trauma.”
The examination also identified an older fracture of Lauren’s left arm that had naturally healed, according to Courtney. The affidavit does not establish how the fracture occurred.
The supplied court records do not include a finalized autopsy report or an independently confirmed final cause-of-death determination.
EVIDENCE INVESTIGATORS SAY IDENTIFIES PATTERSON IN VIDEO
Courtney documented several details he believed supported his identification of Jess Patterson as the person shown in the recording.
According to the affidavit, the person in the video appeared to be wearing green Converse tennis shoes and blue cargo pants. Investigators subsequently reported finding shoes matching that description on the couple’s bed during the search of the residence.
Courtney also reported that Patterson was wearing blue cargo pants resembling those seen in the recording when investigators interviewed him at the Sheriff’s Office substation. Patterson was not wearing shoes during their initial contact, according to the affidavit.
The detective further reported that the voice heard in the recording sounded like Patterson’s voice based on their earlier interview.
Courtney also cited references to the couple’s ages in the recording. The speaker allegedly referred to himself as 34 years old and Lauren as 37.
Court records identify Patterson as 34 years old at the time of the alleged incident. The affidavit identifies Lauren Patterson as 36, although the recording reportedly refers to her as 37.
According to Courtney, Patterson also told investigators that he and possibly his sons were the only people at the residence. Patterson reported that his sons had gone for a walk, leaving him alone with Lauren.
Investigators cited these circumstances as part of the evidence supporting their request for an arrest warrant.
FAMILY AND NEIGHBORS REPORTED PREVIOUS ABUSE ALLEGATIONS
During the investigation, Courtney contacted members of Lauren Patterson’s family in California.
According to the affidavit, Lauren’s mother reported witnessing alleged physical abuse involving Jess Patterson in the past. She also expressed her belief that Patterson later moved the family to New Mexico to conceal the alleged abuse.
That statement reflected the mother’s belief about Patterson’s alleged motive and was not independently established by the supplied court records.
Lauren’s sister also reported knowing about previous abuse allegations. She told Courtney that a friend in New Mexico had contacted her and alleged Patterson struck Lauren with a baton, causing a broken arm.
The sister estimated that the reported incident occurred several months earlier, according to the affidavit.
Preliminary autopsy findings identified an older, healed fracture of Lauren Patterson’s left arm. The affidavit does not establish how the fracture occurred or independently confirm the allegation that Patterson caused it.
Investigators also interviewed neighbors across the street from the Patterson residence. According to Courtney, the neighbors reported hearing what they believed was Patterson physically assaulting Lauren and later seeing her with bruises and a black eye.
The affidavit additionally describes Courtney’s review of law enforcement databases. The detective wrote that the records showed Patterson had previously been arrested in California in connection with domestic violence allegations, which he characterized as up to six or seven arrests, and in New Mexico in July 2026 in a case involving an allegation of battering Lauren Patterson.
The affidavit does not provide the dispositions of those arrests. The reported arrests do not establish convictions or prove the allegations in the newly filed murder case.
