A 61-year-old man has been charged with shooting at a dwelling after gunfire allegedly struck a neighboring residence in Aztec, including near a bedroom window, according to an arrest warrant affidavit filed in San Juan County Magistrate Court. The incident was reported at approximately 7:05 a.m. on April 6, 2026, according to court records.
Investigators allege two rounds hit the home while the occupants were inside, prompting a law enforcement response and a request for an arrest warrant.
Initial Report of Gunfire
According to the affidavit, San Juan County Communications Authority received a call from a resident who reported her neighbor was shooting at her house. She told dispatchers that two rounds had struck the residence and identified the neighbor as Jeffrey Schoeller.
The caller reported seeing the neighbor on the roadway before he walked back toward his residence, according to the affidavit.
Sounds Heard Inside the Home
Investigators later spoke with the reporting party and her husband, who described hearing multiple “booms” shortly after 7 a.m. The husband told investigators he was inside the home when he heard a loud noise, followed by two more that “appeared to be related to impacts to his residence.”
He said the sounds were strong enough that both he and his wife recognized them as impacts to the home. At the time, they had just come inside and were moving through the residence when the noises occurred, according to the affidavit.
Witness Observations Outside
After hearing the impacts, the husband exited the residence and walked toward the neighboring property. He told investigators he saw the suspect on the road but could only see his head and shoulders and did not observe a weapon.
According to the affidavit, the suspect then walked back into his residence and was not seen coming back outside.
Physical Evidence at the Scene
Investigators documented what were described as impact defects on the west side of the home, approximately three feet above a bedroom window. The affidavit states the defects appeared consistent with bullet holes.
The reporting party indicated the damage was new and came from the direction of the neighboring residence. Investigators also noted the suspect had been seen walking back toward his home within minutes of the report.
