Farmington Man Charged With Leaving Scene of Crash, No Insurance After County Road 3950 Collision

FARMINGTON — A Farmington man has been charged with careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and operating an uninsured vehicle following a Jan. 24 crash on County Road 3950, according to a criminal complaint filed in San Juan County Magistrate Court.

Robert Eaglefeather Morales, 22, of Farmington, faces four misdemeanor charges, including careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident involving no great bodily harm or death, leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage and no insurance, according to court records.

All charges are allegations based on court records, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

According to a statement of probable cause filed by the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched Jan. 24 to County Road 3950 after Andrew Medina reported that his vehicle had been rear-ended by a blue Kia.

Deputy Shelby Hindes wrote that Medina reported driving eastbound on County Road 3950 when he observed a blue Kia approaching from behind at what he described as a high rate of speed. According to the affidavit, Medina reported feeling the Kia strike the rear of his vehicle.

Court records state Medina told deputies the other vehicle continued pushing his vehicle after the initial impact. Medina reportedly pulled over and exited his vehicle. He described the driver as a Hispanic male with an “Edgar” style haircut wearing a black shirt and provided deputies with a license plate number, according to the affidavit.

Medina told deputies he believed the vehicle was connected to an earlier Browning Parkway crash based on the license plate he provided, according to the affidavit. Court records state the license plate matched a blue Kia associated with Morales. Court records do not indicate Morales was charged in connection with that earlier crash.

Deputies reported observing rear-end damage to Medina’s vehicle, including what appeared to be fresh scratch marks on the rear bumper. According to the affidavit, deputies later learned Morales had been arrested by Farmington police earlier that day in connection with a separate incident.

According to the affidavit, Farmington Police Officer A. Jones informed deputies that Morales allegedly did not have valid insurance at the time of the crash.
