Multiple Punches, Severe Facial Injuries Lead to Great Bodily Harm Charge in Farmington

A man listed as homeless in Farmington is facing an aggravated battery charge involving great bodily harm following a Feb. 17, 2026 incident, according to a Statement of Probable Cause filed in Farmington Magistrate Court.

The filing alleges the incident involved two separate physical altercations inside a residence and resulted in significant facial injuries to another individual.

What Court Records Allege

Initial 911 Call and Officer Response

According to the statement of probable cause filed by Officer Jacob Hobart, dispatch received a call in which a male was yelling and slurring his speech over the phone, repeatedly asking why officers were not doing anything. A female then took the phone and stated she was hiding in her room because she was afraid she was going to be hit. She further advised that her son and another family member were fighting, the filing states.

While responding, Officer Hobart observed a male walking westbound from Acacia Street and entering a field behind tall corn. Due to darkness, the officer reported he could not positively identify the individual at that time.

The filing states that officers later located Dwayn Uday Fulton lying on the ground wrapped in a blanket near the corn. Officer Hobart reported that Mr. Fulton responded “Huh” when addressed and stated he was sleeping. The officer observed dried blood on Mr. Fulton’s lower lip and fresh blood on his hands, according to the statement of probable cause.

Open Container and Resisting Allegations

According to the statement of probable cause, officers observed an open container of alcohol near Mr. Fulton. After being instructed to stand, Mr. Fulton was placed in handcuffs outside.

The filing states that while standing in handcuffs near the patrol unit, Mr. Fulton grabbed a Sprite. He allegedly opened the can, causing foam to spray into the air. The officer reported that Mr. Fulton then reached down to grab a bottle of alcohol on the ground and attempted to take a drink. The officer stated he intervened and attempted to gain control of Mr. Fulton’s arms.

According to the filing, Mr. Fulton pulled away and resisted efforts to secure him. Officer Hobart reported that he took Mr. Fulton to the ground and maintained control of one arm until another officer arrived to assist. Medical personnel were requested due to visible injuries to Mr. Fulton’s lip and knuckles. After evaluation at a hospital, Mr. Fulton was transported to the San Juan County Detention Center.

Statements Regarding Two Altercations

The statement of probable cause describes two separate physical altercations inside the residence.

According to the filing, Mr. Fulton told officers that during the first incident, the other individual approached from behind and placed him in a chokehold. Mr. Fulton stated he did not lose consciousness but was annoyed. He reported pushing the individual backward and that the altercation ended after he told him to stop.

The filing states that a second altercation occurred shortly before officers arrived. Mr. Fulton reported he was speaking with the other individual’s mother in a bedroom when the other individual entered, said “Let’s fight,” and “chin checked” him. Mr. Fulton stated the individual punched him on the left side of the face and that he responded by striking him five to six times with closed fists, then pulling him down and throwing him to the ground.

Injuries Documented

According to the statement of probable cause, the other individual was transported to the hospital. The filing states he appeared disoriented and had difficulty speaking due to swelling and facial injuries.

Officer Hobart documented extensive swelling to the face and temples, a large cut on the lower lip that was actively bleeding, multiple bruises on both arms and knuckles, and a large purple mass protruding from the left side of the abdomen. The filing states a nurse advised that there was possible broken bones and head trauma pending confirmation. The injuries were described in the filing as consistent with great bodily harm.

Charges Filed

  • Aggravated Battery (Great Bodily Harm)
  • Resisting, Evading or Obstructing an Officer
  • Open Container

The charge is similar to a recent San Juan County detention center battery case involving an officer, according to court records filed in that matter.

Case Status

According to the court record, a case referral was submitted and the matter was marked cleared. Mr. Fulton was booked into the San Juan County Detention Center following medical clearance.
