According to the statement of probable cause, Officer Dylan Darnell was dispatched at approximately 6:03 a.m. March 8 to a domestic disturbance at a residence on San Medina Avenue. A San Juan County Sheriff’s deputy reported that a neighbor appeared severely battered and identified the male involved as Shane Lostak.

When officers arrived, they located a woman lying face down on the ground outside the residence. Police reported observing swelling to her face, blood on one side of her face, and blood in her hair.

The woman told officers she had been in a relationship with Lostak for approximately 10 years and that they had two children together. According to the report, she told officers she had lost consciousness and later woke up in a pool of her own blood.
