Detention Officer Struck at San Juan County Jail Leads to Battery on Peace Officer Charge in Farmington

A woman has been charged with battery upon a peace officer after a detention officer reported being struck during the booking process at the San Juan County Adult Detention Center in Farmington, according to a Statement of Probable Cause filed in court. The incident followed a police response to reports of a person standing in the roadway and obstructing traffic.

The case was filed Mar. 11, 2026, in Farmington Magistrate Court.

Roadway Call on Scott Avenue

According to the probable cause statement, a Farmington police officer reported being dispatched at about 4:39 p.m. on Mar. 10 to the Scott Avenue area regarding reports of a female subject in the roadway obstructing traffic and throwing clothing at passing vehicles.

When officers arrived, another officer had already detained the suspect, who was standing on a sidewalk wearing only undergarments, the affidavit states. Police reported that a park ranger had observed the suspect standing in the roadway and moving between traffic lanes, causing vehicles to slow down or stop.

The ranger told police that when he attempted to speak with the suspect and convince her to move onto the sidewalk, she balled up a shirt and threw it at him, striking him in the face. The ranger reported he was not injured and did not wish to pursue charges.

Transport to Detention Center

Officers transported the suspect to the San Juan County Adult Detention Center. While en route, the suspect reportedly urinated on herself, according to the affidavit.

The reporting officer wrote that upon arrival at the detention center he observed signs of intoxication, including the smell of alcoholic beverages on the suspect’s breath and bloodshot, watery eyes.

Incident During Booking

According to the affidavit, detention staff began the booking process and removed the suspect’s handcuffs so clothing could be placed on her. The officer wrote that the suspect then struck a detention officer in the face with an open palm.

The detention officer reported that the strike hit his right cheek, caused pain and caused his lip to bleed after his tooth cut into it.

Video from the Farmington Police Department Real Time Crime Center was reviewed and reportedly showed the suspect entering the roadway multiple times and throwing a shirt toward the ranger during the earlier encounter.
