2 Storage Units Burglarized in Farmington, 3 Felony Charges Filed

Two counts of commercial burglary and related felony charges have been filed in Farmington Magistrate Court following a February investigation into reported break-ins at a local storage facility, according to an affidavit for arrest warrant.

The affidavit, filed in San Juan County, alleges two storage units at a Farmington mini storage property were forcibly entered and property was taken. Wilson Mark Shanafelt is named as the defendant in court records.

Initial Report of Damaged Storage Units

According to the affidavit, Community Service Officer Allen of the Farmington Police Department was dispatched on Feb. 5, 2026, to a mini storage facility on West Murray Drive after a caller reported possible breaking and entering.

The document states the caller reported observing two storage units, identified as Q36 and Q61, that appeared to have been damaged and rummaged through. The doors to both units were described as having been pried open. The caller did not report seeing any suspects in the area and advised she had attempted to notify the facility office, which was closed at the time.

The following day, the owner of the storage facility reported reviewing surveillance video and determining that the incident occurred on Feb. 5 at approximately 1430 hours, according to the affidavit. The suspect vehicle was described as a white truck without a license plate, and the driver was described as wearing a mask and plaid jacket.

The owner further advised that a separate incident involving the same suspect occurred at 400 Vine Avenue in Farmington. Security footage allegedly showed the individual attaching an object to a lock and accelerating a truck to remove it, according to the affidavit.

Reported Stolen Property

The renter of Unit Q61 told officers she arrived at the storage facility the morning after the reported incident and observed damage to her unit, according to court records. The affidavit states she reported multiple items missing, including a Shark vacuum, her son’s vehicle rims, a black suitcase containing an Xbox and accessories, old phones, a keyboard, totes containing unknown items, and automobile accessories. The total value of the reported stolen property was listed as $2,580.

The renter of Unit Q36 was later contacted and reported missing items after inspecting the unit, according to the affidavit. The document states he reported a Mac tool box valued at approximately $4,000 and a transmission jack valued at approximately $400 as missing.

The facility owner estimated the cost to repair the damaged doors and locks at approximately $3,000, according to the affidavit.

Video Review and Identification

The affidavit states that security footage provided by the facility owner showed a white Ford pickup truck with a lift and dark-tinted windows arriving at Unit Q36 at approximately 1439 hours and later at Unit Q61 at approximately 1453 hours on Feb. 5. The vehicle was described as leaving the property with a full truck bed.

A request for additional footage was submitted to the Real Time Crime Center. According to the affidavit, an operator located footage of a white Ford pickup traveling near Three Rivers Estates and West Broadway before it could no longer be tracked.

On Feb. 18, 2026, a follow-up officer reported that Dustin Stradling, the storage facility owner, reviewed footage with his brother, Donald Stradling, a deputy with the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office. The affidavit states Donald Stradling identified the vehicle shown in the footage and the individual driving it as Wilson Mark Shanafelt. A known booking photograph of Shanafelt was compared to the surveillance images and he was identified as the individual depicted, according to the affidavit.

Search Warrant and Seizure

According to the affidavit, a search warrant was obtained and executed on Feb. 19, 2026, at a residence on Loma Linda Avenue. Officers reported locating a white Ford pickup truck parked at the residence. The document states that Shanafelt acknowledged ownership of the truck and residence.

The affidavit states that a rope with a chain attached was found in the truck bed and was believed by investigators to be consistent with the method used to force open storage unit doors. Inside the residence, officers reported locating numerous tools and items of property. An Xbox with distinctive stickers matching the description provided by one of the reported victims was seized, according to the affidavit.

Other items were examined, but the affidavit notes that some property could not be positively identified at that time.
