A Farmington man has been charged with unauthorized withdrawal, theft or use of a card after investigators alleged he used another person’s debit card to make more than $500 in purchases, according to a criminal affidavit. The alleged incidents were reported Feb. 27, 2026, in San Juan County and later filed in Farmington Magistrate Court.
Debit Card Reported Used Without Permission
According to the affidavit, officers responded to a Speedway gas station in Farmington after a woman reported her debit card had been used without her permission after she left it at the store. She told police she noticed approximately $500 in transactions she did not authorize after reviewing her bank account.
The affidavit states the transactions included purchases at multiple businesses, including Walmart and Speedway locations, totaling about $531.89.
Surveillance Footage and Transaction Review
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from the Speedway and Walmart stores, according to court records. A store manager reported that transaction data was linked to register cameras, and footage showed the defendant reaching toward a card reader and completing a purchase.
At Walmart, an asset protection employee reviewed video that allegedly showed the defendant using a card matching the victim’s description to complete a purchase. The affidavit states the transaction occurred in the early morning hours and included both merchandise and possible cash back.
Workplace Statements and Timeline
A supervisor told investigators the defendant had been working an overnight shift during the time the transactions occurred and was confronted about the allegations, according to the affidavit. The supervisor reported the defendant denied using the card and did not provide it when asked.
The affidavit states investigators believed the timing of the transactions aligned with when the defendant would have been traveling between work and home.
Hospital Contact and Evidence Collection
On March 12, 2026, officers responded to Brookhaven Park West for a reported overdose, where the defendant was found unconscious and transported to a hospital, according to court records. Officers later recovered a backpack and belongings nearby that contained identification and items linked to the defendant.
While at the hospital, officers obtained consent to search the backpack and reported finding multiple cards belonging to other individuals and a small baggie of suspected methamphetamine. The affidavit states the victim’s debit card was not located.
When questioned about video evidence, the defendant did not confirm or deny the allegations, according to the affidavit.
