Farmington Walmart Incident Leads to Robbery and DWI Charges After Man Dragged From Vehicle

Posted by

A violent incident in the parking lot of the Walmart on West Main Street in Farmington led to multiple felony charges after police say a man was forcibly pulled from a vehicle and dragged as it sped away.

According to a sworn statement of probable cause filed in Farmington Magistrate Court, Thomas Kellwood Jr., 24, was arrested following a series of events involving alleged robbery, assault, impaired driving, and a crash into government property fencing.

Authorities state the incident unfolded shortly before 8 p.m. on January 14, 2026.

Initial police contact at Walmart

Farmington police were dispatched to the Walmart at 1400 West Main Street after reports of possible harassment. While en route, officers were advised the reporting party claimed to be experiencing homophobia and declined to answer additional questions.

When officers arrived, they made contact with Kellwood, who was described as wearing a skirt with stockings and a black shirt. Officers noted his eyes appeared dilated, his speech was erratic, and he stated that people were following him and listening to the conversation. Kellwood allegedly told officers he believed he was being watched by the FBI.

Due to Walmart employees requesting that he be removed from the property, Kellwood was issued a trespass warning and walked away from officers. At that point, police stated they had no crime to hold him on.

Vehicle theft and dragging incident

Moments later, officers heard a scream and observed a red four-door passenger vehicle speeding through the parking lot. Police reported seeing a man being dragged while holding onto the vehicle.

The victim, later identified as Colon, fell from the vehicle. Officers stopped to assist him and lost sight of the suspect vehicle as it fled the area.

A witness later provided video footage showing the vehicle driving erratically through the parking lot with Colon hanging onto the door. That video was uploaded into police evidence.

Statements from involved parties

According to police, another occupant of the vehicle, Dylan Dalton, told officers he and Colon were sitting inside the parked car when Kellwood approached them. Dalton stated he did not know Kellwood and believed Colon may have known him based on conversation.

Dalton alleged Kellwood walked to the driver’s side, instructed Colon to roll down the window, then grabbed Colon by the hair and forcibly pulled him from the vehicle. Kellwood then allegedly drove away while Colon was still holding onto the car.

Police later located Kellwood and transported him to San Juan Regional Medical Center for evaluation by Drug Recognition Experts.

Drug recognition evaluation and admissions

Officers reported Kellwood provided incorrect birthdates multiple times before correctly identifying himself. Due to space limitations at the hospital, he was later transported to the Farmington Police Department for further evaluation.

According to the affidavit, Kellwood admitted to consuming alcohol, marijuana, and approximately 30cc of methamphetamine. Drug Recognition Experts concluded he appeared to be under the influence of central nervous system depressants, stimulants, and marijuana and was unsafe to operate a motor vehicle.

After being advised of his Miranda rights, Kellwood agreed to speak with officers.

Suspect’s account of events

Kellwood told police he believed people were after him and claimed they worked for Walmart, which made him angry. He stated he approached what he described as “two white boys” sitting in a red vehicle and attempted to take the car.

He admitted pulling the driver from the vehicle by his hair and acknowledged knowing the victim was hanging onto the car as he continued driving. Kellwood told officers he was confused about why the victim did not let go.

He further stated he intended to drive to what he believed was an FBI office and said he thought he would die if he drove into the building. Instead, police say he drove through two fences at what turned out to be the New Mexico Department of Health facility.

When asked why he drove through the fences, Kellwood reportedly replied, “Why not?”

Blood draw and arrest

Police read Kellwood the New Mexico Implied Consent Act, and he consented to a blood draw. The sample was taken at 12:41 a.m. on January 15, 2026, using a sealed kit provided by the Farmington Police Department.

Kellwood was then transported to the San Juan County Adult Detention Center and booked.

Charges filed

According to jail and court records, Kellwood was booked on the following charges:

  • Robbery
  • Assault with a deadly weapon
  • Immediate notice of accident (two counts)
  • Driving while intoxicated causing great bodily harm
  • Concealing identity
  • Reckless driving
  • Driving without a valid driver’s license

Court records indicate Kellwood reported having no dependents who would be adversely affected by his arrest.

Case status

The case has been referred for prosecution and remains pending in Farmington Magistrate Court. All allegations are based on police statements and court filings. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
