SAN JUAN COUNTY, N.M. — A San Juan County battery case has been filed in Aztec Magistrate Court following a reported domestic dispute that resulted in a felony arrest, according to court records.
Court documents show the case was filed on January 12, 2026, and stems from an incident deputies allege occurred at a residence in San Juan County. The case remains pending.
Cody Peterson, 26, of Bloomfield, is charged with aggravated battery against a household member, a felony offense under New Mexico law. Peterson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

What Court Records Allege
According to a statement of probable cause filed by the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy responded to a reported domestic incident involving a couple at a residence in San Juan County.
Court records state the reporting party told deputies an argument occurred earlier in the evening. According to the affidavit, the dispute escalated into a physical confrontation inside the residence.
Deputies reported observing scratches on the reporting party’s face that appeared consistent with fingernail marks.
Allegations Detailed in the Affidavit
According to court filings, the reporting party stated the argument began after Peterson accused her of infidelity. She alleged Peterson struck her in the face during the confrontation.
The affidavit further states the reporting party reported being strangled to the point of losing consciousness. She told deputies she experienced difficulty breathing during the incident.
Court records indicate the reporting party stated she clawed at Peterson’s face in an attempt to stop the alleged strangulation.
Medical Response and Investigation
Deputies documented a large red mark on the reporting party’s neck, according to court records. As a result, emergency medical services were requested.
Court filings state medics responded to the scene and transported the reporting party to a hospital for medical evaluation due to the reported strangulation and visible injuries.
Meanwhile, deputies remained on scene and spoke with Peterson. Court records note Peterson denied striking the reporting party and did not report any injuries to himself when questioned.
Arrest and Charges
Based on statements collected and evidence observed at the scene, deputies arrested Peterson without a warrant, according to court records.
Peterson was booked into the San Juan County Adult Detention Center on one count of aggravated battery against a household member.
Court Status
As of publication, no plea has been entered and no conviction has been recorded in this case. Court records do not list a bond amount or future hearing dates at this time.
The case remains pending in Aztec Magistrate Court.
