What investigators allege

According to an affidavit for arrest warrant, the homeowner reported receiving a live alert from a security camera inside the residence showing a man inside the home. The homeowner told dispatch the front gate was locked and the suspect would have had to climb over a fence to access the property.

Deputies arrived and established a perimeter around the residence, announcing their presence and calling for any occupants to come outside. Court records state no one was located inside the home.

Investigators observed damage to the front door, door frame, and lock, as well as shoe impressions in the snow leading to and from the residence. Deputies documented damage consistent with the door being kicked in, according to the affidavit.

Evidence collected

Court records state investigators photographed the scene and documented shoe impressions in the snow that were later compared to footwear seized during the arrest. Deputies also noted damage to a chain and gate at the property, which appeared to have been freshly cut.

Investigators later obtained and executed a search warrant for a red Chevrolet HHR believed to be associated with the suspect. During the search, deputies reported locating a cellphone and bolt cutters, including a set consistent with the cut marks observed on the chain found at the scene.

According to the affidavit, shoe impressions found at the residence matched the shoes seized from the suspect during his arrest.

Arrest and charges

Speck was later located and arrested following a traffic stop in Bloomfield. Court records state he was booked into the San Juan County Adult Detention Center on the listed charges.

Based on the physical evidence, security footage, witness information, and investigative findings, deputies concluded there was probable cause to charge Speck with burglary and related offenses.

A warrant for Speck’s arrest was approved and filed on Jan. 22, court records show.
